South Carolina man arrested for car theft in Southampton

Brent Freeman, 38, turned himself in to authorities on Sunday along with a stolen pickup truck after being found at the Wakefield Inn Motel.

COURTLAND, Va. – A man was arrested in Southampton County on Saturday and charged with stealing a pickup truck.

According to the Southampton County Sheriff's Office, the theft of a Toyota Tacoma was reported from the 16000 block of Plank Road on July 17.

After initial investigation, officers believed the vehicle was in the Greensville County or Sussex County area.

The following day, the stolen pickup truck was found in Sussex County at the Wakefield Inn Motel and further investigation led authorities to identify 38-year-old Brent Freeman of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as their suspect.

When it was discovered that Freeman was still in a room at the motel, an arrest warrant and a search warrant were obtained.

According to the sheriff's office, Freeman turned himself in and was taken into custody by the Sussex County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police before being transported to their jail.

The Southampton County Sheriff's Office charged Freeman with grand theft of a motor vehicle, while charges from the Sussex County Sheriff's Office are pending.

Freeman is scheduled to appear in Southampton County District Court on Tuesday.
