U.S. Attorney Updates Crime-Fighting Measures in Northeastern North Carolina

EDENTON, NC (WITN) – U.S. Attorney Michael Easley says efforts to curb violent crime in northeastern North Carolina are paying off.

Easley met today in Edenton with police chiefs and sheriffs from Bertie, Chowan, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck and Dare counties.

Since January, when the Violent Crime Action Plan was launched, they have charged 21 people, seized 26 firearms, including five machine guns, and seized enough fentanyl to kill 120,000 people.

“In January of this year, I met with local law enforcement in the Albemarle region to discuss ways to work together to reduce violent crime,” Easley said. “Since VCAP first launched, we have filed charges against 21 individuals who we believe are significantly contributing to violence in the region. Those involved in violent crime should take note – our work continues, and you are next.”

VCAP is coordinated by the U.S. Attorney's Office and supported by the Edenton and Elizabeth City police departments, sheriff's offices in Bertie, Chowan, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck and Dare counties, the North Carolina Department of Law Enforcement, North Carolina SBI, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, ATF, Homeland Security Investigations and area district attorneys.
