Man charged with murder of N. Charleston garbage truck driver

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – A 24-year-old man has been arrested in New York in connection with the murder of a North Charleston building department employee.

Tyrell Lamont Smith, 24, is accused of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Smith was arrested on Aug. 1 by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in New York, said North Charleston police spokesman Harve Jacobs.

The charges stem from the July 18 shooting in which 26-year-old Da'twan Gatling was killed while driving a garbage truck in the Bayfield Drive area.

According to police, Gatling drove his truck into a tree on Dorchester Road near Michaux Parkway because of the shooting. He died in the hospital.

Smith is currently being extradited to South Carolina, Jacobs said. A photo of the summons was not immediately available.
