Man accused of burning baby faces domestic violence charges

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The trial of Valentino Gomez, accused of burning a toddler to death, began Tuesday morning.

Gomez was investigated after an 8-month-old baby was admitted to a Plainview hospital with severe burns.

Gomez initially stated that a plate of hot noodles fell on the baby's face while he was eating. He then told investigators that the injury occurred when the baby turned on the hot water during a bath.

However, doctors said the infant's injuries were inconsistent with these claims.

The baby's mother, Sheridan Keyser, is also awaiting trial for failing to seek medical attention in a timely manner after the baby was burned.

The defense said the two adults tried home remedies such as burn ointments. They were reportedly afraid that child welfare services would tear their family apart.

The child is now in the care of another family member.

The trial will continue on Wednesday.
