Sacramento County reports third death from this year's heat wave. Woman from Citrus Heights was 53

A Citrus Heights woman died of heat stroke earlier this month, Sacramento County officials said Tuesday, the third confirmed heat-related death this year.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the woman as 53-year-old Stephanie Baker, who died Aug. 4 at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, a county news release said.

The medical examiner's office did not examine Baker, the news release said, because she was hospitalized at the time of her death. Baker was hospitalized on Aug. 3, said county spokeswoman Kim Nava. The county said Baker is not homeless.

The Sacramento region broke records last month during a prolonged heat wave that killed at least two county residents. The city then reached triple-digit temperatures on six of the first seven days of August, reaching 40 degrees on Aug. 3, National Weather Service records show.

Albert G. Edadiz, a 77-year-old Sacramento resident, died of heat stroke on July 12 at UC Davis Medical Center after being hospitalized on July 3 for heat-related symptoms, county officials said last month. The temperature in Sacramento on July 3 was 42 degrees, according to the weather service.

Kevin Gerhardt, 58, died of multi-organ failure due to heat stroke in his trailer at a North Sacramento trailer park on July 7. A friend said he could not afford to repair the trailer's air conditioning system.
