Report: Pregnant prisoner gives birth to girl

A Florida woman who became pregnant while serving a prison sentence in Miami gave birth to a baby girl in June, but her family is still waiting for answers about how the pregnancy happened.

Daisy Link, 29, is charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing her husband in 2022. But last Christmas, she told her family in a phone call that she had become pregnant while incarcerated at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She reportedly attributed the pregnancy to a male inmate who had passed a semen-splattered glove through an air conditioning vent.

Link then told her family that she had been sexually abused, but later explained to her lawyer that this was not the case.

Her sister Crystal Bareto told ABC affiliate station WVSN in Miami that Link gave birth to the girl in June.

“The baby was born on June 19th and 48 hours [later]they handed the baby over to the mother of an inmate,” she said. “We don't even know if that's the real family.”

The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department is investigating. It previously said there was no evidence of a sexual assault. WSVN reports that the investigation is still ongoing.

Bareto said she believes an outside agency should investigate the prison and called the whole ordeal “absurd.”

“We never got the real story of what happened to her there,” Bareto told WVSN. “And I feel like as time went on, as the investigation went on, the story of what happened to my sister was swept under the rug.”

She said she believes the agency is dragging out its investigation because it could lead to disciplinary action against its employees, including dismissal.

Link allegedly shot her husband in the leg outside their Homestead home on June 25, 2022.

“I think I hit a major artery. You're going to be OK,” Link is heard saying to her husband, who later died, according to a video.

Court records show she is also charged with assault on a correctional officer stemming from an incident last month. Her court date is scheduled for Thursday.
