Borderlands 4: Everything we know

Borderlands 4 is finally here. The highly anticipated sequel has been confirmed, and it's coming sooner than you might have expected. From a release window to a look at the first teaser, here's everything we know so far.

The Borderlands series has undoubtedly hit its lowest point in 2024. With the Borderlands movie being a historic flop both critically and at the box office, the future of the entire franchise has been called into question.

However, these concerns were quickly put to rest when 2K and Gearbox finally announced what fans have long been hoping for. Borderlands 4 is indeed real and has been in the works for years.

While it's still early and very little has been revealed, it's not too early to catch up on everything we know so far. From a release window to all the early leaks, we've got you covered.

Is there a release date for Borderlands 4?

No, there is no set release date for Borderlands 4 yet, but we do have a release window.

Borderlands 4 is set to release in 2025, and we can still pinpoint it. In a press release accompanying the announcement, we learned that the sequel will launch in Take-Two's 2026 fiscal year. That means Borderlands 4 will launch sometime after September 28, 2025.

Of course, since it's still early, this reveal should be taken with a grain of salt. Delays can always happen, not to mention that Take-Two already plans to release GTA 6 around this time in 2025, meaning Borderlands 4 could be delayed so they don't directly compete.

Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the reveal to provide further insight into the game's development. Borderlands 4 has been in the works “for years,” he confirmed, so there's a real chance it really isn't that far away.

We'll keep you updated here with more details as the launch gets closer.

Borderlands 4 trailer

The first teaser for Borderlands 4 appeared at the start of Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, announcing an improved art style and, as Take-Two confirmed, “a new planet.”

Borderlands 4 Platforms

The release of Borderlands 4 for Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store has been confirmed.

There is no information about support for previous generation hardware, which means the game was likely built from the ground up with the latest technology in mind.

What will it be about?

While it's obviously far too early for a proper summary, the initial press release assured that Borderlands 4 will follow the same game plan as the first three main installments. Fans can look forward to another round of traditional treasure-hunting fun.

“Players once again take on the role of a legendary Vault Hunter, searching for secret alien treasures while blowing up everything in sight.”

Who is developing Borderlands 4?

As reported by BusinessWire and Gearbox itselfwe know that Borderlands 4 is being developed by Take-Two Interactive after joining forces with Gearbox, the original developers of the Borderlands series.

Take-Two Interactive is best known for its published games GTA 4, Kerbal Space Program, Bioshock and many more.

All rumors and leaks about Borderlands 4

In May 2021, rumors about Borderlands 4 reached their peak. Thousands of fans were convinced that Gearbox was involved in or would be involved in the development of a new Borderlands game. However, the rumor was squashed after Gearbox owner Randy Pitchford posted on X to confirm that “these rumors are NOT true. Gearbox is the primary developer of all future games in the Borderlands series (or any Borderlands-related games) and is not involved in co-development.”

Shortly after, Pitchford shared his job openings, asking for anyone who has “skills to pay the bills and wants to get involved in Borderlands.” He then revealed that they are “working on the big thing,” hinting at Borderlands 4.

Now we know that Take-Two is developing the highly anticipated Borderlands 4 thanks to its acquisition of Gearbox.
