Castle Football wants to return to its defensive roots

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Let's start with the Knights' offense. Last year, this 7-4 team was very aggressive, scoring 49 or more points five times. But one of their most explosive players, Antonio Harris, has graduated. Max McCool, however, is back and ready to make his mark on the season as a leader. And no, despite that razor-sharp technique, Coach Hurt is not stepping in at quarterback, he has options under center, both with experience.

“I think quarterback is a position where you learn best from experience. Mitchell and Boden have both spent a lot of time at quarterback, both played quarterback in varsity games, and I think that's great,” said head coach Doug Hurt.

“I feel like everyone on offense has their own role,” senior running back Maximus McCool said. “I can't run this whole offense if everyone on offense doesn't do their own job.”

On the other side of the ball, Castle has been known for its defense in the past, and this season they boast two new additions from the big leagues: Gavin Leach for Toledo and Benny Patterson III for Cincinnati.

“I think I'm a lot healthier than I was last year. I know I battled a lot of injuries last year, we had a really young team,” senior defensive lineman Benny Patterson III said. “I think it all comes together because when you play against younger players, those younger players are now older players, and after all those injuries, I used the offseason to try to heal them so I can be the person I can be.”

The Knights open the season this Friday against Reitz.
