Former President Trump to speak about crime and safety during his fifth visit to Michigan in 2024

Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak about crime and safety during a press conference at the Livingston County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday afternoon.

After visits to Waterford, Grand Rapids and Detroit, this is the Republican candidate's fifth visit to the Great Lakes State since February.

News Channel 3 plans to stream the press conference live on Tuesday from 3 p.m.

Trump's visit to Michigan comes nearly a week after his running mate, Senator JD Vance (R – Ohio), made a solo stop at Byron Center on August 14.

Vance used his time behind the podium to criticize Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, calling her campaign “fake.”

He also focused his speech on border policies supported by Harris, including the catch-and-release law, claiming that these policies have directly put the American people at risk.

“She has allowed millions of illegal immigrants into the country. That makes our communities less safe,” Vance said. “Kamala Harris has turned the Border Patrol into a travel agency for violent criminals and copycats from around the world.”

Across the aisle, Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minnesota), discussed reproductive rights, the economy and other issues during one of their first joint rallies on August 8 in Michigan.

“The election is going to be a fight, we like a good fight,” Harris said. “If you know what you stand for, you know what you're fighting for, and we know what we stand for.”

The couple also expressed support from the unions, saying: “We are all in the same boat.”

“We enjoy working hard because we know what we stand for,” Harris said. “When you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for. We know what we stand for, and we stand for the people, we stand for the dignity of work, and we stand for freedom. We stand for justice. We stand for equality.”

As of Tuesday, Harris is slightly ahead of Trump in terms of popularity, according to a report released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center, which surveyed around 9,201 adults, including 7,569 registered voters.

About 44 percent of voters have a positive opinion of Harris, an increase of 8 percentage points since May, the report said.

Another 42 percent of voters have a positive opinion of Trump, an estimated three percentage points increase over the past three months, the report said.
