Vancouver police find 55 bullet casings after drive-by shooting

VANCOUVER, Washington (KPTV) – Vancouver police are investigating after a drive-by shooting left dozens of bullet casings behind in a densely populated neighborhood.

No one was injured, but police said the shots hit several cars.

People are shocked after hearing what sounded like a shooting right outside their homes.

“It sounded like fireworks were going off right next to our window. We sleep with the window open,” said Samantha Weston, who lives nearby. “I heard at least 30 shots. It sounded like it went on forever.”

Police said officers responded to reports of a drive-by shooting late Monday night around 11:20 p.m. and found about 55 shell casings near West 31st Street and Fruit Valley Road and just about a block away on Thompson Avenue.

“It's unbelievable,” said a neighbor. “Boy, they definitely disposed of them. They stuck some bullets in the ground.”

“It was just crazy and my kids woke up crying,” Weston said. “We had to duck and take cover and turn off the lights just to make sure we didn't get hit by anything.”

Detectives from the Vancouver Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit are investigating.

Vancouver police said that such a large number of shell casings was unusual and that fortunately no injuries were reported.

Still, residents said it was a tight squeeze for many in this densely populated neighborhood full of families.

“It's enough if a stray bullet ricochets or something. I mean, there are children everywhere on the street,” said a neighbor. “It's just annoying that it gets to this point.”

“Yeah, it's good that no one was hurt, but I wonder what the point of it all was,” Weston said.

Anyone with information about this case should contact Vancouver Police.
