Trial of girls accused of murdering Reggie Brown continues

Reggie Brown was found dead on Georgia Avenue in DC on October 17, 2023. Officials say he was beaten to death.

WASHINGTON – Trial proceedings will continue in the death of a 64-year-old Washington, D.C., man who was found dead in an alley in northwest Washington state last year.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), 64-year-old Reggie Brown was found dead on Georgia Avenue in Northwest DC on October 17, 2023. Officials say he was beaten to death. Since then, five girls, including 12 years old, have been arrested and charged with murder.

Brown's family was in the courtroom Tuesday as prosecutors questioned the MPD detective working on the case.

The detective said Brown was found lying on his back and partially clothed, with cuts to his head and face and blood on his hands.

In earlier court proceedings, prosecutors played a video of the attack that was reportedly taken by the girls. The video showed five young girls and a man chasing Brown into an alley, then showed the people kicking Brown as he lay in a pool of blood. Afterward, the camera rotated as the girls took selfies.

At the same court hearing, one of the 13-year-old defendants interrupted proceedings and punched a U.S. Marshal. She was later carried out of the courtroom on a stretcher.

During Tuesday's hearing, another video was shown in the courtroom of an interview room in which the investigator questioned one of the girls accused of beating Brown to death.

Brown's family was among those present in the courtroom. His sister and niece told WUSA9 they wanted the maximum sentence for the five girls accused of killing Brown. Another sister also said she wanted the girls' parents held accountable.

“I think there should be new laws for the parents of these children, they should be charged with neglect,” said Brown's sister Nasia Israel.

The sisters told WUSA they plan to appear in court every day because he is their youngest brother.
