Hyderabad airport roof leaks during heavy rain; video goes viral

Hyderabad has become the latest addition to the worrying series of 'leaking airport roofs' this week due to heavy rains. Images from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport show water pouring down from the ceiling as many passengers gathered to watch the spectacle. The development comes just weeks after parts of the ceiling of Delhi, Rajkot and Jabalpur airports collapsed due to heavy rains.

The incident was discussed on social media earlier this week and many sharply criticized the administration for not addressing the problem.

“Isn’t that in the newly expanded terminal? You can see that it is poorly made,” said one X user.

“I thought GMR was following some standards in construction. It seems that not all safety and quality standards in construction are being followed. What if the roof collapses like it happened in Delhi terminal? This is a new extension that was opened recently,” added a second.

“The most sought-after club for leaky roofs,” mocked a third.

Meanwhile, airport authorities said the “unusual” incident was caused by heavy rain and efforts were being made to resolve it immediately.

“Thank you for raising the issue. The heavy rain caused an unusual water leak in the terminal. Our technical team responded promptly and is working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience and assure you that our ground team is closely monitoring the situation,” the RGIA employee assured on X.

Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport was closed for several weeks after parts of the roof and pillars outside the departure area collapsed on June 28. The accident killed one person, injured at least eight others and crushed several cars. The fatal roof collapse also prompted the government to call for an audit of the structural stability of the airport buildings and related infrastructure.

An almost identical turn of events also occurred in Jabalpur on June 28, where a portion of the elastic roof collapsed at Dumna airport. The newly expanded terminal had been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just three months earlier.
