Florence County officials arrested 65-year-old Cheryl Filyaw in May and charged her with three counts of third-degree assault. She was released on nearly $3,200 bail shortly after her arrest.

An incident report obtained by WMBF News states that a deputy with the Florence County Sheriff's Office met with Yasmeen Hyman-Smith, the mother of a student at Savannah Grove Elementary School, on May 20.

According to the police report, Filyaw, who was working as a substitute teacher that day, “got into a scuffle” with some students and pushed the woman's daughter out of her chair, injuring her face. Filyaw then reportedly picked the child up and placed her in the chair before being escorted out by security personnel.

Hyman-Smith said the incident occurred in the morning, but she was not informed of it until several hours later when the school board called.

After seeing her injuries, she took her daughter to the hospital and filed a police report, adding that no report was filed until she took matters into her own hands.
