This is what you should know today.

The Obamas make the Democrats want Harris

Former President Barack Obama played the role of elder statesman in his keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention last night, delivering a message of hope, admiration and determination. “I don't know about you, but I'm energized,” he said, recalling the early days of his own campaign in the city where he began his political career.

His speech was a reminder of Democratic principles, a roadmap for the party's future, a tribute to his former vice president, Joe Biden, a call for Americans to avoid division and, perhaps most importantly, a support for Vice President Kamala Harris. Obama listed her accomplishments, including her actions to reduce health care costs.

The speech was not without criticism of Harris' Republican opponent. Obama got the most laughs when he called out former President Donald Trump for his “weird obsession with crowd size” and made a pointed gesture that earned him applause from the crowd.

Before Obama’s speech, former First Lady Michelle Obama said had some stitches himselfand chided Trump for his repeated use of the term “black jobs.” “Who's going to tell him that the job he's looking for right now might be one of those 'black jobs'?” she asked.

Video shows the moments before the superyacht sank

Before the Bayesian superyacht sank off Sicily on Monday, grainy images showed the vessel being buffeted by a storm and appearing to lean to one side. Then the yacht disappeared, replaced by darkness. The newly released video of those fateful moments was taken as the search continues for six of the 21 people who were on board the vessel, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter. They are probably trapped in the ship's hullalmost 170 feet underwater.

Experts say the speed at which a yacht built for rough conditions capsized is breathtaking. “It is extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” said Captain Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting, Inc. What is not rare, experts say, is the type of storm that the Bayesian.

Selection of personnel: A rural Democrat keeps his distance from Harris and hands out beer

Rep. Jared Golden, Democrat of Maine, shakes hands with community members in northern Maine on August 16, 2024.Alex Seitz-Wald / NBC News

To meet Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, I was instructed to look for a house with giant Trump flags at the end of a long dirt road, then turn into an overgrown driveway and park next to the U.S. congressman's massive black pickup truck.

Golden is not your typical Democrat. The tattooed former Marine is trying to win a fourth term in one of the whitest and most rural districts in the country, and the only one in New England that voted for Donald Trump. He is staying away from the Democratic National Convention and refusing to endorse Kamala Harris. At a small-town parade where he handed out Bud Lights from a rusty stroller, I saw him connecting with the rural, working-class voters who have turned their backs on his party. offers a model that some are now trying to imitate. — Alex Seiz-Wald, senior political reporter
