Man dies in accident in Akron after police chase on Copley Road

AKRON, Ohio – A 29-year-old man died and four others were injured in a crash that occurred during a chase in Akron Tuesday night.

According to Akron police, it was approximately 6:47 p.m. when officers stopped a vehicle for suspicious activity “after observing traffic violations in the 600 block of Copley Road.”

When the officers got out and approached the vehicle, the driver is said to have run off and sent the police on a chase.

“The pursuit continued along several residential streets in the Copley Road area before being terminated approximately one minute after it began due to excessive speed,” Akron police said.

According to police, the driver then continued north on Rosyln Avenue at high speed.

“The vehicle then ran the stop sign on Roslyn Avenue at Copley Road and entered the path of a vehicle traveling westbound on Copley, resulting in a collision,” police said. “After the initial collision, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck two other cars before striking a tree.”

According to police, the driver of the suspect vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. His name is being withheld pending further investigation.

According to police, a pistol was found inside the vehicle.

The passenger, a 30-year-old man, was taken to hospital with injuries that police say are not life-threatening.

The drivers of the three other vehicles involved in the accident were also taken to hospital. Police say their injuries are also not life-threatening.
