Man from Marion gets 20 years in prison for shooting a woman in the legs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Marion man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting a woman in the legs in Cedar Rapids last year.

According to court documents, DeWayne Hunt was found guilty by a jury in June on charges of assault with intent to cause serious injury, willful assault resulting in serious injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon – with intent, being armed with intent, and possession of a firearm or assault weapon by a felon.

According to a criminal complaint, police were called to the 3200 block of Pioneer Ave SE for a shooting. Officers on scene found a woman with gunshot wounds to both legs.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses identified Hunt as the shooter and reported that he left the scene in a Dodge Durango. After a chase, investigators found a gun behind the passenger seat where Hunt had been sitting. Test rounds from that gun matched the shell casings found at the crime scene.
