MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three people were killed and seven others injured when a 16-year-old driver ran a red light during a police chase in Hickory Hill Tuesday night, causing a five-vehicle pileup, police said.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers attempted to stop the teenager before the accident occurred.

According to MPD, the teenager ran a red light and caused an accident involving five vehicles.

Two women were killed in the crash, and another woman was taken to the hospital and later died, police said. The teen driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the deceased women were 26 and another was 47, according to MPD. A 2-year-old girl was also injured but is expected to recover, according to police.

Three other women, two men and a child suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the accident, police said.

The 16-year-old driver was charged with aggravated robbery, fleeing arrest in a vehicle and possession of prohibited weapons, in particular a machine gun.
