Man with hunting knife arrested after midday incident in downtown Boston, police say

Boston police arrested a 51-year-old man in downtown Boston on Tuesday after receiving reports of a person chasing people with a machete.

At around 1 p.m., officers arrested John Madej of South Boston on a charge of aggravated assault when they arrived in the area of ​​10 Park Plaza, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.

Officers observed the suspect in the area of ​​Boylston Street and Charles Street, authorities said.

When police approached him, Madej “assumed a fighting stance,” the statement said, but officers were able to arrest him and found a hunting knife in his front right trouser pocket.

After Madej's arrest, officers discovered that there was already a warrant out for his arrest for failing to register as a sex offender.

According to police, Madej was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon.

He was expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
