1 person killed in head-on collision in Antrim County – 9&10 News

ANTRIM COUNTY – On August 21 at 6:19 a.m., a patrol officer with the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post in Star Township was on patrol on Alba Highway near Olds Road.

The trooper was driving westbound behind a box truck when an eastbound SUV driven by a 24-year-old Gaylord man crossed the center line and struck the box truck head-on, troopers said.

The truck's driver, a 54-year-old man from Atlanta, tried to brake but was unable to avoid the SUV, troopers said. The SUV driver did not attempt to brake or slow down before the crash, they said.

The 24-year-old driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The 54-year-old truck driver declined medical treatment, but his employer took him to a local hospital for an examination and drug and alcohol test after the crash, per company policy, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Patrol officers were assisted by officers from the Antrim and Otsego County Sheriff's Offices, as well as officers from the Mancelona and Gaylord police departments, Star Township Fire Department, Mancelona Fire Department and Star Township EMS.
