Penei Sewell injury update: Detroit Lions RT leaves Wednesday's practice early

The Detroit Lions suffered an injury to a key player during practice on Wednesday after right tackle Penei Sewell was forced to leave the game early.

According to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com, Sewell left the session early after suffering a foot injury. The exact cause and severity are currently unknown.

According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network, Sewell was able to leave the field under his own power, albeit slowly. That's still a better sign than if he had been carted off the field.

“Penei Sewell left practice today with an injury to his left foot,” Rogers wrote. “Trainers removed his shoe and examined his ankle and foot before he walked – slowly but unaided – to the locker room for further evaluation.”

It goes without saying how important Sewell is to the Lions. Since being selected No. 7 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Sewell has developed into one of the league's best offensive linemen, earning two consecutive Pro Bowl selections and one All-Pro first-team selection over the past two seasons.

If Sewell is out, the Lions will likely turn to veteran swing tackle Dan Skipper, but let's hope it doesn't come to that. The Lions' regular season opener is in just over two weeks on Sunday, September 8.
