Increase in non-fatal drug overdoses in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – Lexington has seen an increase in suspected non-fatal drug overdoses since June 2, according to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. This trend is worth monitoring.

According to the agency, the increase is reflected in data from the Overdose Detection Mapping Application System (ODMAP).

In a Facebook post, the agency urges the public to carry naloxone to prevent an opioid overdose, “especially if you or someone you know has a substance use disorder.”

Naloxone can work regardless of the type of drug taken, since fentanyl has been found in “all types of regulated drugs,” the agency writes.

The agency's Harm Reduction Program also provides naloxone to those in need after a 10- to 15-minute training session. Classes are available Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the health department's office at 650 Newtown Pike.

The health department advises the public to avoid using drugs alone, to learn about treatment options, to regularly check in with friends and family and to share information, and to call 911 if an overdose is suspected.
