US Marshals arrest domestic shooting suspect after brief standoff at Birmingham motel

A man wanted in connection with a shooting at a private residence in Birmingham was arrested by a team of U.S. Marshals early this morning after a brief standoff at a Birmingham motel.

Ricardo Loyola, 34, was found hiding under a bed in a room at the Relax Inn on First Avenue North in the city's east side.

Earlier this week, Birmingham police announced that Loyola was wanted in connection with a domestic violence-related shooting. He is suspected of shooting a woman in the arm.

Authorities said he was also wanted in Hoover for grand theft and in Arkansas for violent crimes.

Late Wednesday morning, police surrounded the downstairs motel room, announcing they had a search warrant and saying, “We're not leaving. There's going to be gas. There's going to be a dog. It's not worth it,” according to a live video on Facebook.

U.S. Marshal Marty Keely, of the Northern District of Alabama, said he ultimately forced his way into the room after using a chemical spray.

Loyola was taken to the hospital for evaluation and then booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
