Maine man arrested in Orrington named as deceased prison inmate

Penobscot County officials have released the identity of a recently deceased prison inmate.

The deceased was identified as a man from Stonington

Randy Webber, 51, of Stonington was found unconscious in his housing unit at the Penobscot County Jail on Wednesday morning, August 14, 2024. According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, Mr. Webber never regained consciousness and was later pronounced dead. His death occurred less than two days after he was booked into the jail.

He was one of three people arrested during a traffic stop in Orrington

Webber was arrested along with Staphne Webber of Ellsworth and Garrett Collins of Bucksport during a traffic stop in Orrington on Sunday, August 11, 2024. All three were charged with trafficking in prescription drugs, and the charge against Webber was upgraded to aggravated trafficking.

The charges arose from a search of the vehicle, which resulted in the seizure of

  • 286 mg methamphetamine
  • 4.5 20 mg Methylphenidate Tablets
  • 7.9 ppw cocaine base (crack cocaine)
  • .38 special pistol, loaded with 2 cartridges (found at Webber)

His cause of death was not disclosed

While the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office has not released any information about how Webber died, they stated at the time of death that it appeared to be a medical/health event and that there was no evidence of foul play.

This death remains under investigation.
