Job Corps celebrates 60th anniversary

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – More potential, more opportunity. For over 60 years, Job Corps has helped young people across the country receive free job training in a variety of industries.

Sam Lees is the Business Engagement Liaison at Penobscot Job Corps.

“In those 60 years, Job Corps has been able to help over three million young people get a job and escape the poverty trap, so it's a pretty cool thing to be a part of,” Lees said.

He said the school used Wednesday to play and celebrate.

In the morning there was an exhibition for companies and community leaders.

“A lot of the students talk about the jobs they want to have, and we tell them about the opportunities here,” Lees said. “It's one thing to think about it in your head, but it's quite another to actually meet the people. The people you'll potentially be working for, and actually do hands-on networking.”

In the afternoon there was a party for the students.

“We have a little kickball and volleyball. Staff versus students,” Lees said. “Today, lunch is being delivered so students who work in the cafeteria have the day off. We have a big bouncy castle and face painting.”

Lees said he is proud to be part of the Job Corps.

“We often don't have a very strong presence in the community and it's time we changed that because Job Corps has been around for a very long time,” Lees said. “We've helped over three million young people.”
