80 arrests by Horry County violent crime task force

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Authorities in Horry County have released the full list of names of the 80 people arrested in a recent crackdown on violent crime.

The Horry County Police Department announced that a task force arrested 80 people, including 40 gang members, and seized 58 illegal weapons in two weeks. The task force consisted of the HCPD Criminal Investigations Bureau, the Operations Support Bureau and a recently formalized HCPD Gang Unit.

The HCPD said Wednesday that repeated incidents of violence in the same area in the northwest of the county prompted the action. Among the items seized during the arrests were nearly 60 illegal weapons and several drugs.

The task force began tracking murders, attempted murders, home invasions, carjackings and drive-by shootings in northern and western Horry County. From there, officers focused on the Highway 9 corridor from Little River to Loris, but the task force found that some illegal activity was expanding into Myrtle Beach, Conway and Loris.

According to police, half of those arrested belonged to several gangs, some of them were even teenagers.

Speaking to WMBF News on Wednesday, HCPD Deputy Chief Kris Leonhardt said his team is doing everything in its power to keep the community safe.

“We're here for you. We're watching these crime trends, these crime statistics,” said Leonhardt, who works in the Operations Support Bureau. “We're actively looking for the people who are committing these crimes. The violent crimes are the ones that hurt our communities the most. We know that. We've taken the initiative to put our gang unit in motion to work with our drug and street crime unit and go into the communities where these crimes are happening to try to help the community.”

In addition to the arrests, police seized nearly 65 grams of meth, 55 grams of fentanyl, 35 grams of crack and nearly 50 grams of cocaine. Officers also seized over $18,000 in cash.

HCPD spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov said earlier this week that seizing large quantities of weapons and drugs like these could help reduce future acts of violence.

The department thanked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, U.S. Marshals Service, DEA, ATF and U.S. Homeland Security for supporting the task force during the two-week operation.
