What are Mormon moms on TikTok? Wives go viral as culture sparks interest

Thanks to Hulu's new show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, TikTok is experiencing a newfound interest in Mormonism — and as it turns out, there are several internet-famous Mormon girls on the app.

Interest in Mormonism has increased online after the trailer for the first season of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” was released on Hulu in August of this year.

It may come as a surprise to some social media users that TikTok has a dedicated section for Mormon mothers and wives.

In this part of the platform, popular Mormon wives like Taylor Paul and Whitney Leavitt share a variety of videos – some of which are updates from their lives, others are dance videos that eventually go viral.

Taylor, who was involved in a domestic violence case in 2023 in which her five-year-old daughter was killed by an overturned chair, has amassed over 4 million followers since the altercation.

The influencer has now recovered from her “low point” and continues to post TikToks with her three children and husband Dakota Mortensen.

In one of her viral videos, she talked about how she was criticized for not following the strict values and rules of Mormon culture by participating in Hulu's new series.

“The members are afraid of what we are making the church look like, but they themselves are making it look ugly.”

Popular Mormon mother Whitney Leavitt often causes a stir by posting dance videos with a mixed group of friends from her religion.

In a TikTok shared with her 2 million followers, Whitney welcomed her fans to the “updated Mormon MomTok” as she danced with her friends to “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake.

Mormon mother Jen Affleck, who is related to actor Ben Affleck through her husband, also posts viral TikToks from her home and family life.

Her 1 million followers love the time she spends as mother and daughter with her eldest child Nora. “Such a wonderful family,” one wrote under a video of her family of four.

TikToker Hannah Neeleman also gained millions of followers by sharing her life as a Mormon. While her content sparked controversy among fans, especially after her husband gave her an apron for her birthday, the former ballerina continues to garner attention by posting about her livelihood on Ballerina Farm.

Hannah is also known as a “Tradwife,” short for “Traditional Wife,” meaning a housewife and mother who lives out the traditional role of a wife and mother.

Mormon mothers and wives are often criticized for seemingly violating their religion through drinking, smoking, and swearing, yet social media users seem to find their content engaging and entertaining.
