Due to a gas leak in Johnson Creek, several roads are closed on Wednesday morning

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Officials responded to a gas line break in the Village of Johnson Creek Wednesday morning.

The leak was reported shortly before 9:30 a.m. and the Johnson Creek Fire Department immediately closed the intersection of Milwaukee Street and North Watertown Street, authorities said.

Authorities said nearby residents were told to stay safe until the situation was stable and initial investigations revealed the cause of the leak.

Johnson Creek and Jefferson County authorities managed to seal off the area and test air quality, deeming it safe enough to reopen roads and businesses.

Initial investigations revealed that a large, high-pressure rupture in an underground gas pipeline had been hit, releasing a nine-meter-high cloud of natural gas.

The leak no longer poses an active threat and WE Energies has begun the lengthy repair process, Johnson Creek officials said.
