FBI investigates how maggots got into DNC breakfast in Chicago

CHICAGO — Attendees of the Democratic National Convention got a nasty surprise on Wednesday when maggots were found in the breakfast service at a hotel – and the FBI is now investigating the apparent ploy by the activists.

At around 6:45 a.m., hotel guests discovered the disgusting, protein-rich coating, after which at least one person had to be examined by emergency services.

“We can confirm that a group of individuals caused disruption at a DNC-related breakfast event at our hotel this morning,” Fairmont Chicago Hotel spokeswoman Haley Robles told WGN-TV.

“Our team responded immediately and cleaned and disinfected the area to ensure the event could continue without further incident.”

The local station reported that an FBI van was spotted outside the hotel, which is housing state delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri and South Dakota.

Although it was not immediately clear who was responsible, maggots were released last month in protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's delegation at the Watergate Hotel in Washington.

Maggots eat dead flesh after flies lay eggs – and may have been deployed to draw attention to the thousands of reported civilian casualties in Gaza as Israel responded to Hamas's October 7 surprise attack that killed about 1,200 people.

Demonstrators against the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip protested outside the Democratic Party Convention.

A spokesman for the city of Chicago said: “Several unknown female perpetrators are said to have entered [the hotel] and began placing unknown objects on tables with food. The perpetrators then allegedly left the area. One victim was treated on site and released. In addition to the CPD, the Chicago FBI is assisting with the investigation. No further information is currently available.”

The FBI referred the Post to this statement.

Treasury Secretary Pete Buttigieg held an event at the same hotel on Wednesday morning. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether he was affected by the incident.
