Commerce Secretary doesn't believe news of dire job cuts just because Trump said it: “I'm not familiar with that”

Social media users sharply criticized President Biden's Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo for admitting to ABC News on Wednesday that she was not “familiar” with today's major revision to labor market numbers.

ABC News correspondent Kayna Whitworth asked Raimondo what she thought about the Bureau of Labor Statistics' revision of employment numbers.

“I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Bureau of Labor's statement today that over 800,000 fewer jobs were actually created than originally reported,” Whitworth said.

The reporter played a clip of former President Trump speaking about the report at his rally in North Carolina on Wednesday. “The government inflated the numbers with an extra – listen to this – 818,000 jobs that don't exist. So they said they existed when they never existed. They built them up so they could say what a wonderful job they're doing,” Trump said.

Raimondo apparently dismissed the news as some kind of misinformation being spread by Trump. When asked whether the new version could be a burden for Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Harris, she said no.

“No. When I hear that, I don't believe it at first because I've never heard Donald Trump say anything true,” Raimondo said.

“It’s from the Bureau of Labor,” Whitworth replied.

“I'm not familiar with that,” Raimondo said, even though the report had been released several hours earlier.

Raimondo went on to praise the optimism surrounding Harris' “pro-business” economic vision for the country. Meanwhile, the presidential candidate has been criticized in recent days for proposing what critics, including on the left, have called government price controls on businesses.

Social media users couldn't believe that one of the government's top economic officials was unaware of the jobs report news.

Charles Cooke, senior editor of the National Review, commented: “This is the Secretary of Commerce speaking.”

Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich wrote: “There's only so much you can fake or hide before it all falls apart. Biden's downfall, faking the economy, redefining 'recession,' etc.”

“Holy hell. We are governed by idiots,” declared conservative commentator Ned Ryun.

Libs of TikTok creator Chaya Raichik wrote: “That’s the Secretary of Commerce, by the way.”

Comedian Tim Young said: “They think you’re stupid.”
