Leaks in sewer lines caused two collapses on Gurgaon's Basai Road in 10 days | Gurgaon News

GURGAON: Within 10 days, Basai Street has two Collapses in the same place, sparking Security concerns among residents and commuters. Officials have attributed the collapses to a leaky sewer line.
However, a permanent solution to the problem will take at least six weeks and can only be implemented after the Model Code of Conduct has been repealed.

Rehabilitation of the sewerage system costs 3.5 million rupees

On August 10, part of the road collapsed, leaving a hole 1.10 meters wide and 3 meters deep. The section was cordoned off and the road and pipes were repaired.
On Tuesday, a large part of the road collapsed at the same spot when a truck drove past.
There were also two collapses on Basai Road in 2022 and 2023. MCG has now prepared an estimate of around Rs 3.5 crore to strengthen the region Sewerage networkwhich was laid about 15 years ago.
However, this is likely to take some time as the tendering process will not begin until after the parliamentary elections on October 1. As a temporary measure, the company has replaced three pipelines.
“We will strengthen the sewer line with CIPP liners and have prepared an estimate of Rs 3.5 crore for the same. However, the tender process will not be initiated until the code of conduct is lifted. So far, we have replaced three pipes. Another pipe will be laid at the site of Tuesday's collapse. Once the tender is floated after the elections, we will take a month to strengthen this sewer line and find a foolproof solution to the problem,” said Nijesh Kumar, chief engineer, MCG.
The sewerage network was laid by the building authority and HSVP in 2009. It was handed over to MCG in 2018, representatives of the company said.
Local residents said many people have stopped using the stretch fearing accidents. “Last week, a portion of the road caved in in front of my shop and now a large portion of the road has caved in again after a truck drove over it and got stuck. Given the frequency of road cave-ins during the rainy season, we fear for our safety. Authorities have restricted traffic on the affected stretch of road, but shopkeepers like me have to carry on with their businesses. These incidents also negatively affect business as the road is blocked and no one stops to shop,” said Laxmi Devi, who runs a shop selling religious items.
According to MCG officials, CIPP is an innovative approach to sewer repair that minimizes the need for excavation. This trenchless technique allows for the rehabilitation of damaged sewer lines without the extensive excavation required by traditional methods.
By using CIPP, sewer construction projects can be completed in a fraction of the time compared to other repair techniques. The reduced excavation requirement not only saves time but also minimizes disruption to the surrounding environment.
