Son arrested on suspicion of shooting his mother and killing two others in Point Loma

Two people were killed and a woman injured in a shooting at a home in Point Loma on Wednesday afternoon, San Diego police said.

The woman's 60-year-old son was arrested as the suspected shooter. Authorities did not release his name.

The shooting was reported around 3:55 p.m. on Zola Street near Poinsettia Drive, about a block from Point Loma High School in the Loma Portal neighborhood.

Several people, including the suspect, called 911 to report the shooting, said San Diego Homicide Lt. Jud Campbell.

When officers arrived at the home, they found the injured woman, who is in her 80s, in the front yard. Her son was also in the yard. He was arrested without incident, Campbell said. Officers also found a shotgun, but would not say whether they believed it was the weapon used in the attack.

The lieutenant said police found a woman in the house who was probably in her 60s. She had been shot.

The third victim, a man in his thirties, was found shot dead in the side yard.

The police did not want to provide any further information about the relationship between the suspect and the two people killed.

While the police were investigating, a distraught woman cried in front of the cordoned-off crime scene and shouted that her friend – presumably one of the victims – had already contacted the police about the suspect.

Campbell confirmed that police had received previous reports, but declined to elaborate on those calls.

The shooting occurred about 25 minutes after the high school closed. The school's principal called parents and told them the incident had nothing to do with the school and no staff or students were involved.
