Pelosi touts job growth despite Biden-Harris delay as employment numbers revised downward | National

(The Center Square) – At the beginning of her brief speech at the Democratic Party Convention on Wednesday evening, former Speaker of the House and US Representative Nancy Pelosi praised the successes of the Biden-Harris administration, including in economic terms.

“On January 20, 2021, with the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we established one of the most successful presidencies in modern times and quickly proved that Democrats deliver,” said Pelosi, R-Calif. “Millions of jobs, stronger infrastructure and rural broadband, a Biden child tax credit…”

Pelosi – who was among the prominent Democrats who urged Biden to end his re-election campaign, leading to Harris' rise to the top of the ballot – made no mention of news released earlier in the day about revised federal jobs data. The U.S. Labor Department published the revised data This revealed that they had overestimated the number of jobs created in the US in the period ending in March 2024 by 818,000. This significant revision raised serious questions about the health of the economy. The figures were revised downward from about 2.9 million to about 2.1 million.

Former President Donald Trump accused the Biden-Harris administration of fraudulently inflating earlier figures.

“The Harris-Biden administration was caught fraudulently manipulating labor statistics to hide the true extent of the economic ruin it has inflicted on America,” Trump said in a statement Wednesday. “New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the administration inflated the numbers with an additional 818,000 jobs that DO NOT EXIST AND NEVER EXISTED.”

In addition, inflation reached a 40-year high under the Biden-Harris administration; consumer prices are now more than 22 percent higher than when Biden and Harris took office.

Pelosi, who spoke for just a few minutes, attacked Trump over the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, by supporters protesting Trump's claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

“We must not forget who attacked democracy on January 6. It was him,” Pelosi said. “We must not forget who saved democracy that day. It was us.”

Pelosi said voters must elect Harris.

“I know Vice President Harris is ready to lead us to new heights,” she said.
