Democrats fail with Republican crime policies to restore safety in black communities: Georgia Attorney General

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has a simple solution for Democratic cities fed up with violence and thieves: enforce the law, lock up criminals, and protect American citizens and their businesses from crime.

“Elections have consequences,” he told Fox News Digital, while denouncing Vice President Harris as the “patron saint of left-wing prosecutors” while slamming progressive crime policies that have failed the communities they supposedly benefit.

“She was for defunding the police, sanctuary cities and cashless bail,” he said.

Harris, a former California attorney general who has boasted about her past as a prosecutor on the campaign trail, also publicly supports bail funds that help get defendants out of jail when they are held on bail. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“All the prosecutors we've seen across the country, from Los Angeles to San Francisco, where she was a prosecutor, to St. Louis and even in our state in Athens and even in Atlanta, Georgia … she's the model for what they really aspired to,” Carr told Fox News Digital. “And that's the new criminal justice reform, which is not enforcing the law.”

He added that the policies of recent years amounted to a “roadmap for higher crime.”

In Athens, a college town known for the University of Georgia and its football team, left-wing policies created a nightmare earlier this year when a violent illegal immigrant was accused of kidnapping and murdering nursing student Laken Riley as she jogged in a campus park. Outraged residents sharply criticized local officials for endorsing the “sanctuary” policy during a press conference after her death.

“Look at the communities that are most affected by this violent crime,” he told Fox News Digital. “It's the communities that Democrats and leftists claim to want to protect, but in reality it's conservatives and Republicans who are keeping people safe. I think that's critically important.”

Chicago, host of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, may have only a third of the population of New York City, but police statistics show that it has the highest murder rate.

“You can either go down a path where you ignore the law, you circumvent the law and crime goes up, or you can enforce the law,” he said. “And you see exactly what happens.”

It's a move police have been demanding for years: to reverse bail reform that puts repeat offenders back on the streets almost immediately to reoffend. That lack of consequences, along with the reluctance of left-wing prosecutors to charge suspects to the full extent of the law, has weakened police morale across the country, leaving cities struggling to recruit and retain staff.

Former Chicago Police Chief Gene Roy told Fox News Digital this week that there are thousands of vacancies in the city's police force.

The Democratic elite has been criticized for being completely out of touch with the reality of Chicago crime. Their convention is being held just blocks from where 7-year-old Jai'Mani Rivera was shot and killed earlier this year. The suspect could have been behind bars but was released on home supervision, which he allegedly ignored.

Despite a shortage of personnel, Chicago police skillfully handled anti-Israel protests outside the Israeli consulate on Tuesday night, gently rounding up violent demonstrators, telling them to disperse and arresting about 70 people when they refused to go home.

Carr said Chicago has historically been one of the greatest cities in the country, but in recent years the city has been “an incubator of these left-wing politics” and has been plagued by gun violence, robberies, car thefts and population loss.

“I find it absolutely ironic that the Democrats went to Chicago where they now continue to elect people who don't believe in the rule of law, don't believe in enforcing the law – and then some of the security measures they've taken to put walls around the convention center,” he said. “Even though the border is not secure, they have fought any conversation about walls or more security at our southern border.”

Carr is also a supporter of the Protecting Americans Action Fund, which was created to counteract the financial support that left-wing donors like billionaire George Soros gave to progressive prosecutor campaigns across the country, resulting in prosecutors' offices today led by George Gascon of Los Angeles, Alvin Bragg of Manhattan and Kim Foxx of Chicago.
