The charges against Malavet are based on testimony from a former resident of the Youth Detention Services Unit, a separate unit in Concord.

Malavet is accused of having exploited his position of power to coerce the plaintiff into sexual acts between June and November 2001, which Malavet had previously denied.

Jury selection lasted most of the day, as more than 100 potential jurors were narrowed down to 15. Nine women and six men were chosen for the jury. Twelve will decide whether Malavet is guilty, while the other three will serve as alternates.

The trial is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday. More than a dozen witnesses could be called to testify and the trial is expected to last five days.
