Prison opens inmate-run kindergarten for rehabilitation and green innovation – News Karnataka

Mangaluru, August 21 (PTI): The District Jail Mangaluru has opened a unique nursery that combines the rehabilitation of prisoners with environmental protection. The nursery was officially opened by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Mugilan on Tuesday and offers a variety of seedlings grown by prisoners for sale.

DC Mugilan was inspired to take up this initiative after visiting the prison months ago. There, he noticed the lush greenery on the prison premises, carefully maintained by the inmates. Realizing how much potential these efforts have for the society, he facilitated the establishment of a plant sales center at the entrance of the prison.

The day care centre is a joint project between the municipality and the Forestry Department with the aim of providing meaningful and productive employment opportunities to the inmates. Speaking at the opening, DC Mugilan stressed that the day care centre is a step forward to promote the rehabilitation and transformation of the inmates.

An inmate involved in building the kindergarten said the project symbolizes growth and the possibility of a second chance, even within the narrow confines of the prison.

Chief District and Sessions Judge Ravindra M Joshi presided over the event and lauded the initiative as a model for rehabilitation of prisoners. District Jail Superintendent BT Oblesappa and District Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Shobha BG also participated in the event.
