Richard Simmons' death ruled an accident – KIRO 7 News Seattle

A coroner has determined the cause of death of fitness guru Richard Simmons, officials said Wednesday.

Thomas Estey, Simmons' representative, told People magazine: “Richard's death was an accident due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. Aside from the medications prescribed to Richard, the toxicology report was negative.”

His longtime housekeeper found Simmons on July 13, a day after he celebrated his 76th birthday, CNN reported.

There were reports that Simmons fell in his bathroom on his birthday but decided not to go to the doctor. He was found unconscious next to his bed the next morning.

The Los Angeles Police Department had stated that there was no third-party negligence, but that investigations were necessary, which is why the cause of death was initially given as unknown.

A few days before his death, Simmons told People magazine: “I feel good! I'm grateful to be here and to be alive for another day. I'm going to spend my birthday doing what I do every day: helping people.”

In addition to announcing the cause of death, Simmons' family also thanked their fans “for their tremendous love and support during this time of great loss,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lenny Simmons previously told the celebrity gossip site: “I don't want people to be sad about my brother. I want them to remember him because he brought real joy and love into people's lives. He genuinely cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer them help. So don't be sad. Celebrate his life.”
