Vegetable prices rise in China due to adverse weather

In response to recent weather-related vegetable price increases across China, markets have started offering vegetables at discounted prices to help stabilize the market. A notable example is the vegetable wholesale market in Changxing County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, where traders have reported gradual price increases for various vegetables since early July. Local reports reflect a significant increase in vegetable prices, particularly for green leafy vegetables, due to a prolonged heatwave with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

A wholesaler pointed to the shortage of local vegetable production in Changxing county, with most of the market supply coming from Anhui, Henan, Shandong and other regions. In these areas, vegetable production has declined due to the combined impact of high temperatures and rainfall, which has contributed to the price increase. Nevertheless, an expected improvement in supply by September is expected to mitigate the price increase.

Markets in Shanghai are fighting the price increase by introducing discounts on vegetables. In Xuhui District, traders are actively promoting discounts and matching selling prices with purchase costs – a move that is welcomed by consumers who want to save money when shopping.
