Watch live | Verdict against man for murder of Jacksonville radio host still pending

Earlier this month, Bursey Armstrong was convicted of the 2022 murder of Tasheka Young. He faces 50 years to two life sentences in prison.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The man convicted in the killing of Jacksonville radio host Tasheka Young will be sentenced today.

Bursey Armstrong, 35, was found guilty earlier this month of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Young and her unborn child.

Young had previously worked as a broadcaster for Jacksonville's Power 106.1 Tru Hip Hop station. She was known in the Jacksonville community as “Tysheeks.”

Armstrong had a history of violence toward Young. At the time of her death, her mother told police that Armstrong had put a gun to Young's head two weeks before he killed her.

An arrest warrant says Young's mother, Olivia Young, was the one who found her unconscious and bleeding while her one- and three-year-old children were in the house. She told police the door appeared to have been kicked in.

The victim's mother told police at the time that she spoke to her daughter daily but was unable to reach her. Olivia Young became even more concerned when she received a call from Armstrong, the father of the victim's children, who said he was also unable to reach the victim.

A road worker later testified that Young's phone was found on the side of the road.

An arrest warrant stated that officers responded to a 911 call to 12450 Biscayne Blvd., where the plaintiff found Young bleeding and unconscious on the bedroom floor.

“Tasheka stood by me and said, 'Mom, you have to stay strong and say what you have to say,' and that's what I did,” Olivia Young testified at the trial.

While the trial focused on Armstrong, Young's family wanted to focus on her legacy.

“Whatever she could do for you, she did it,” Olivia Young said. “If you needed something, Tasheka gave it to you. That was my baby. She's like mommy.”
