Shooting and car theft in Racine; teenager charged with intentional homicide

Latrell Davis (not in custody); Cincere Davis; Alexjandro Medina

Three teenagers are charged with first-degree premeditated murder and other crimes in connection with an Aug. 8 shooting in Racine that left one man dead and another injured.

Prosecutors accuse 17-year-old Latrell Davis, 16-year-old Cincere Davis and 15-year-old Alexjandro Medina of stealing a car at gunpoint, shooting at a group of men and abandoning the car within 15 minutes.

Shooting scene

On August 8, at around 10:15 p.m., police were called to the Byrd and Oakdale area. A man was found in the grass in front of a house with a gunshot wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Another man who was shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries and spoke with police. According to a criminal complaint, he said they were sitting on the front steps of the home with a third man – who was not shot – when a silver Chevrolet Impala pulled up and parked.

The man said he didn't notice anything unusual and didn't see who was in the car when he “heard popping noises that he thought were fireworks” and realized someone was shooting at them from the Impala. He and the man, who wasn't shot, told investigators they didn't know why someone would shoot at them or target them.

Officers found 40 shell casings on the street and in front of the house, the complaint states. Investigators believe the shots were fired from the passenger side of the car, which was eastbound on Byrd Avenue.

Stolen car

About 15 minutes before the shooting, a carjacking occurred near the corner of 9th Street and College. According to the complaint, the victim said three people stole his silver Chevrolet Impala at gunpoint when he stopped to answer a phone.

According to prosecutors, surveillance camera footage showed the Impala on Byrd Avenue immediately after the carjacking and caused it to flee the area immediately after the shooting.

The stolen Impala was found near 17th and Holmes in the early morning hours of Aug. 9. According to the complaint, surveillance video showed it parked there minutes after the shooting. Two people were seen getting out, and “it is possible” a third person got out but was not seen due to lighting.

According to the report, six cartridge cases were found inside the car, which “probably came from the same weapon.”

Search for shooters

Surveillance video from a business near where the Impala was found shows three people “simultaneously approaching Holmes Street after the stolen vehicle was parked,” the complaint states. Officers identified Latrell Davis, Cincere Davis and Medina from previous encounters.

After his arrest, Medina admitted to being involved in the carjacking, according to the indictment. He said he was in the stolen car with “Trell” and Cincere Davis when one of them said he would “kill the first person” they saw. He said Cincere Davis was the driver and “Trell” was in the passenger seat. Medina said “Trell” started shooting, was unsure if Cincere Davis fired any shots, and denied firing any shots himself.

Cincere Davis was arrested on August 15. The complaint states he had two handguns in his backpack. Investigators fired both weapons and compared the shell casings to those found at the crime scene and in the stolen vehicle. It was determined that both weapons were “likely” the weapons used in the shooting.

In court

All three young people are accused of complicity in a crime as follows:

  • First degree intentional murder
  • Attempted first-degree intentional murder (two counts)
  • Armed car theft

According to court records, a warrant was issued for Latrell Davis' arrest. Both Cincere Davis and Medina appeared in court on August 19 and bail was set at $100,000.
