Detroit Lions OT reportedly “good”

According to several reports, the Detroit Lions were able to avoid another serious injury.

Right tackle Penei Sewell suffered a foot injury during his final practice on Wednesday, but an MRI scan showed he is “fine.” to ESPNwhich classified it as a sprained ankle on Thursday.

Running back Craig Reynolds also avoided serious injury after leaving training due to a leg injury.

Sewell left practice on Wednesday during a scrimmage against the first-team defense. Jared Goff attempted a long shot along the sideline to Brock Wright, but it was not completed, and Sewell remained on the ground after the play, holding his foot. He limped off the field and stayed on the bench to watch the offense finish the attack, then slowly walked back to the team compound under his own power.

“When Penei went down, I was like, 'Ah, not Penei,' because that's our best offensive lineman,” Lions safety Brian Branch said after practice. “And hopefully it wasn't anything bad or anything. I don't think it was, so we're just praying.”

The update comes as no surprise after the Lions indicated they did not believe the injury was serious.

Losing Sewell would have been a major blow to the dynamic offense. Sewell, 23, is a cornerstone of the Lions' prized offensive line at right tackle and is coming off a season in which he was named a first-team All-Pro tackle. He has made two consecutive Pro Bowls and started 50 of a possible 51 games in his career. He has played most of his games at right tackle after moving to the position from left guard at Oregon.

To keep him on the team for the next five seasons, the Lions made him the highest-paid offensive tackle at the beginning of the offseason – a number that has since been surpassed.

The Lions had to deal with a number of injuries to expected regular players in the preseason.

Tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs are both out with hamstring injuries, but coach Dan Campbell said Monday he expects them to return early next week, as well as Terrion Arnold, Dan Skipper and Malcolm Rodriguez.

Newly signed free agent DJ Reader is also close to being activated from the physically unable to perform list, but he said Monday that there is no timetable for his return, although he is feeling good about his recovery from his torn quadriceps.

The Lions begin the season in 17 days on September 8 against the Los Angeles Rams at Ford Field on Sunday Night Football.
