Trial against Jon Jones postponed for a month because an officer could not appear

UFC Heavyweight Champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] must wait another month or more for his trial in a New Mexico court.

The trial before a single judge was scheduled for Thursday in Bernalillo County, NM. Jones and his attorney Christopher Dodd attended the hearing virtually, as did the alleged victim in the case, Crystal Martinez.

Judge Asra I. Elliott adjourned the trial until September 26 after receiving short notice that the officer who responded to the alleged incident involving Jones was unable to appear due to a police dispatch.

Jones, 37, is accused of assault and interfering with telecommunications. He had previously pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The charges stem from an alleged March 30 altercation with two UFC anti-doping testers from Drug Free Sport International at Jones' Albuquerque home. Martinez, one of the drug testing agents, accused Jones of threatening her during a urine sample collection and taking her phone. The employee also said Jones looked and smelled like he was intoxicated.

The employee claims Jones put her phone in her pocket, “got in her face” and said, “Why are you f***ing people coming so early? Do you know what happens to people who come to my house? They end up dead.”

Jones immediately denied the allegations after reports of the incident surfaced and a home surveillance video was shared that appeared to show a high-five with the worker.

Jones, 37, is in the midst of a long layoff. He hasn't competed since March 2023, when he captured the vacant UFC heavyweight title via a first-round submission of Ciryl Gane. Jones was scheduled to defend his belt against former champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 last November, but the fight was canceled with three weeks to go after Jones tore his pectoral tendon in training.

The Jones vs. Miocic fight is widely expected to be rebooked and headline UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in New York this November.
