Lawton shooting suspects turn themselves in

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Two people wanted in connection with the August 13 murder of Daveon Smith have voluntarily turned themselves in.

Both Michael Epps and Michael McKenzie turned themselves in to LPD investigators without incident. Epps is charged with first degree murder and McKenzie is charged with accessory after the fact.

“The arrests were made without incident,” the LPD said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our community remains our highest priority and we continue to work diligently on this ongoing investigation. We appreciate the cooperation of all involved as we seek to ensure justice and protect public safety.”

Smith was found in the front seat of his parked vehicle and later died at the hospital. He was at a birthday party at the time of the shooting.

According to the arrest affidavit, eleven empty cartridge cases were found at the crime scene.

A third person, Dejean Shannon of Kennedale, Texas, is also charged with first-degree murder.

Prison records indicate that Shannon is in police custody.
