Texas family remembers victims of fiery highway accident

Fort Worth police have arrested and charged a 19-year-old man with manslaughter while intoxicated.

FORT WORTH, Texas – Of all the fondest memories Frinchesca Gunn has of her Uncle Willie, the time he came over to help cook is the one that has stuck with her the most.

“He came to my house and we wanted to cook pork chops,” she said. “My sister and I went into the kitchen. He put cinnamon on the pork chops and we laughed so hard.”

She holds on to such funny moments because she knows there will be no more.

“There are a lot of memories that we could just sit back and laugh about,” she said. “But that's all we have. That's not right.”

Gunn said her uncle, his girlfriend Amber Hopewell and their three young children were the five people killed in Monday's serious crash on the I-35W exit ramp to Seminary Drive.

She says they were just out that night, trying to make some extra money.

“They worked, they did Doordash,” Gunn said.

Fort Worth police say 19-year-old Eduardo Gonzales crashed into them around 1 a.m.

“Then the car caught fire and the five victims were pronounced dead at the scene,” said Fort Worth police Officer David Segura.

In an email, MedStar told WFAA that the crash was so severe that identifying the victims was difficult.

“Burning alive like that is crazy,” Gunn said.

Police say Gonzales was drunk. He is charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and drunk driving.

“He's 19, where did you get all that alcohol?” Gunn said.

The investigators are looking for an answer to this question.

“All we can think about is how they suffered in that car. What were they doing, were they screaming, were they praying?” Gunn said.

And as the Gunn family tries to process all of this, they hope that sharing their grief might stop someone else from driving while drunk.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support one of the young victims who died in the crash.
