Shooting in the Bronx: Woman shot in the shoulder outside bodega in Morrisania; police investigating

MORRISANIA, Bronx (WABC) – Police are investigating after a woman was shot outside a corner store in the Bronx on Thursday.

The shooting occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in front of 1397 Franklin Ave., in the Morrisania neighborhood.

The victim, a 35-year-old woman, was sitting on folding chairs on the corner with a group of friends. She was sitting on a milk crate.

Eyewitness News obtained surveillance video capturing the frantic moments when the shots were fired.

It is difficult to tell from the video where the shots came from, but you can see a man on the street ducking behind a parked car and everyone else taking cover.

“It sounded like fire, like an explosive device went off. That's all,” said resident Veronica Clarke. “I'm shocked that this happened so close to the end of summer.”

According to police, the 35-year-old victim was shot in the shoulder.

According to witnesses, the woman lay unconscious after the blow.

“Everyone just started running and then I saw her fall to the ground,” said witness Marina Lopez.

Friends of the victim tried to resuscitate her, but she did not respond.

She was taken to St. Barnabas in critical condition.

Local residents say this is the second time shootings have occurred on this corner in less than a week.

A woman who spoke to Eyewitness News reporter CeFaan Kim said the man who fired shots on the same corner over the weekend was the same man who opened fire on Thursday.

She says there was an argument over money on Sunday and the woman who was shot on Thursday was not his intended target.

“I saw him. I was sitting right there. I saw him,” she said. “He said he would come back. So he came back and started shooting.”

Authorities describe the suspect as a male wearing red shorts and a black ski mask.

No further details have been released and the investigation is ongoing.
