Boy dies after accidentally shooting himself

SANTA QUIN- A five-year-old boy was killed when he accidentally shot himself with a pistol on Thursday afternoon.

Santaquin Police Lt. Mike Wall told KSL TV that the boy found a 9mm handgun in the back room of his home and fired a single shot, fatally hitting him.

Wall said his parents and siblings were in the house at the time of the shooting, but were not with the boy. The family tried to save the boy's life until Santaquin EMS arrived and administered first aid. The boy died of his injuries at the scene.

“The father was performing CPR when we arrived,” Wall said. “There was obviously a tragic scene and obviously a gun was fired in some way or another; that's part of the investigation that we're still looking into.”

Investigators do not suspect a crime and do not know how the boy got the gun.
