Suspect arrested two months after murdering man on his 71st birthday

Corey Schultz is facing charges in connection with the death of 71-year-old Keith Brown.

SAN ANTONIO – Two months after a fatal hit-and-run crash east of downtown, San Antonio police have arrested the driver accused of striking and killing a man and then driving away at a high rate of speed.

According to an arrest warrant, 34-year-old Corey Schultz was speeding through the intersection of E. Commerce and N. Hackberry at around 11:30 p.m. on June 9 when he struck 71-year-old Keith Brown.

Schultz is said to have sped away, while Brown was left lying in the middle of the road where he died.

Brown died on his 71st birthday.

According to police records, Brown was crossing E. Commerce when the driver of a Subaru Forester, later identified as Schultz, sped down E. Commerce at a high rate of speed, struck Brown and then drove away.

Later that night, investigators reported finding the abandoned Subaru just over a mile from the fatal crash scene.

When detectives searched the vehicle, they discovered a receipt from a Target store dated the day before the accident, according to police records.

The arrest warrant further explains how investigators were able to track down the surveillance video from the Target store and find the crucial clue that would ultimately lead to solving the case.

According to investigators, video from the Target store shows a Subaru Forester pulling into the parking lot, and they were able to immediately identify the vehicle as the one involved in the hit-and-run crash at E. Commerce.

And then another breakthrough in the case.

Surveillance video shows an image of the man driving the Subaru. According to an arrest warrant, investigators identified him as Schultz.

Schultz is now facing charges of failure to render aid resulting in death.

According to Bexar County online court records, Schultz was arrested in 2021 and charged with drunken driving.

He reportedly pleaded guilty and was granted probation last year.
