1.3 million Virginia residents hate their jobs, new survey shows

VIRGINIA — If you hate getting up and going to work every day, you may be among the more than 1.3 million Virginia residents who loathe their jobs, according to a new survey.

Credit counseling website CardRates.com recently surveyed 3,000 workers from various job markets across the United States to find out how many people are actually pursuing their dream jobs.

It turns out that only 14 percent of American workers pursue the careers they wanted as children, while 59 million workers openly admitted to hating their jobs, according to the survey.

In Virginia, 30 percent of workers said they hate their job (that's 1,336,546 people).

The survey asked respondents to identify the biggest obstacles they faced in pursuing their dream career:

  • Financial constraints: 35%
  • Lack of opportunities: 34%
  • Family obligations: 22%
  • Academic challenges: 7%
  • Market demand: 2%

Although they are dissatisfied with their current job, two-thirds of respondents in the survey said they would still consider changing jobs to pursue their childhood dreams.

Here are the top 10 dream jobs according to employees:

  1. Physician
  2. Teacher
  3. musician
  4. athlete
