Bears defensive back leaves Chiefs game on stretcher after horrific injury

In the third quarter of the Chicago Bears' final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, a scene occurred that no one wants to see during a football game: a serious injury to a player's head or neck. On Thursday, it was Douglas Coleman III of the Bears who was injured, and everyone at Arrowhead Stadium reacted in silence.

Coleman went down in the second half after attempting to tackle Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell, resulting in a nasty injury that forced him to be taken out of the game on a stretcher and ambulance.

The Bears signed Coleman after a practice last January after the defensive back spent the last two seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Ottawa Redblacks. He spent two years with the Redblacks and had 60 tackles with 4 sacks and 3 interceptions last year.

Coleman originally entered the National Football League professional league in 2020 as a non-drafted free agent for the Denver Broncos. He was a longtime starter at Texas Tech from 2016 to 2019, where he was selected to the All-Big 12 first team in his final season.

The Bears had played one more game than almost any other team when they came to Arrowhead, thanks to their opener against the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame Game earlier in August. Both the Bears and Chiefs have now completed their preseason games.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Coleman and his family.
