Sex offender from Arizona allegedly threatened to kill during election campaign visit

COCHISE COUNTY, Arizona. – Following a manhunt, a sex offender from Arizona was arrested.

In a press release, the sheriff's office said it received a report Wednesday of a “threatening message” on social media directed at Trump, who was planning to hold a rally in the area to promote his campaign to re-elect the president.

Investigators then examined the message and concluded that it was written by 66-year-old Ronald Syvrud, a registered sex offender with multiple arrest warrants.

On Thursday, a second threatening post was identified on social media and attributed to Syvrud, MPs said.

“As part of the operational plan for today's visit by U.S. President Donald Trump, locating this individual was of the highest priority,” the press release said. “The intelligence obtained led to a possible location in the St. David area and several units were dispatched there.”

On Thursday afternoon, police officers found Syvrud and took him into custody, the sheriff's office said.

According to investigators, Syvrud had warrants out of Wisconsin for drunken driving and failure to appear in court for drunken driving, and out of Graham County, Arizona, for hit-and-run and failure to register as a sex offender.

As a result of Thursday's arrest, Syvrud is charged with failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of threatening behavior.

Threats against Trump attracted national attention after he was nearly assassinated during a rally in Pennsylvania in July.

Shortly after the attack, a Florida man identified as Michael Wiseman was arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill Trump and U.S. Senator JD Vance.
