Correctional officer injured after man accused of murdering Cleveland police officer tries to escape

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The man accused of murdering a Cleveland police officer and his grandmother was caught on camera trying to escape from corrections officers at the jail.

19 News has obtained bodycam video from correctional officials showing 24-year-old Delawnte Hardy attempting to escape from the Cuyahoga County Jail.

“Where are you running?” a correctional officer asked Hardy as he started running.

Hardy is currently in prison and is accused of the murder of Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter and his own grandmother.

The prison incident occurred on July 20 when a correctional officer let him out of his cell to take a shower.

Prison officers pursued him and paralyzed him with pepper spray.

“When I got him out, he just started running. I was like, 'Hey, where are you? Oh, run!' He tried to run out,” a correctional officer explained in the video. “The door was closed, though, so we tried to grab him and get him back, but he was resisting the whole time.”

County officials say Hardy received medical attention before being returned to his cell. A correctional officer was injured in the scuffle.

“Every single one of you is screwed and unemployed, I can guarantee it,” Hardy told the officers who received the call. “The building is mine!”

There is currently no chance of Hardy getting out of jail before trial. A judge revoked Hardy's $10 million bail late last month.

Hardy pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He appeared in court on Thursday and was sentenced to a psychiatric examination.
